Temporary Roll-Off Dumpster Rental FAQs
Learn the basics of renting and using roll-off dumpsters for your home or business.
What is a roll-off dumpster?
A roll-off dumpster is a heavy-duty, open-top container designed for large cleanup projects. Made of welded steel, its rectangular shape allows for easy, on-site loading of junk, trash, and debris. These dumpsters are ideal for cleanups, remodels, renovations, and demolitions. They also feature a full-width back door, making it easy to load heavy or bulky items. The name “roll-off dumpster” comes from the way they are delivered—by a truck that rolls the container off the back for convenient placement.
Why would I rent a roll-off dumpster?
A roll-off dumpster is an essential tool for any home or business construction, remodeling, or cleanup project. It provides a safe and convenient way to collect and contain garbage and debris in one central location. With its large size and open design, a roll-off dumpster is perfect for junk removal, major cleanups, demolition and construction debris, roofing and driveway replacements, yard waste, and post-disaster renovations after a hurricane, fire, or flood.
What size roll-off dumpsters can I rent?
The first step in renting a dumpster is choosing what size to get. Since dumpster sizes vary by location, you’ll need to provide your address to see what options are available in your area.
Dumpsters are measured in cubic yards, which represent the volume of waste they can hold. One cubic yard is 3 feet wide x 3 feet long x 3 feet high — roughly the size of a standard washing machine or kitchen stove.
The most common roll-off dumpster sizes include:
- 10 yard dumpster – 7 feet wide x 12 feet long x 3.5 feet high (holds 10 cubic yards of waste)
- 15 yard dumpster – 7 feet wide x 14 feet long x 4 feet high (holds 15 cubic yards of waste)
- 20 yard dumpster – 7 feet wide x 20 feet long x 4 feet high (holds 20 cubic yards of waste)
- 30 yard dumpster – 7 feet wide x 20 feet long x 6 feet high (holds 30 cubic yards of waste)
- 40 yard dumpster – 7 feet wide x 22 feet long x 7 feet high (holds 40 cubic yards of waste)
While the length, width, and height of dumpsters may vary slightly by manufacturer and location, the total volume of each size remains consistent, ensuring you get the right capacity for your project.
What size roll-off dumpster do I need?
The best dumpster size for your project depends on three key factors: debris type, debris volume, and available space. If you’re having trouble deciding on the right size, call our team for a personalized recommendation based on your project needs.
Will a roll-off dumpster fit in my driveway?
Most driveways easily accommodate our dumpsters, which are 7 to 8 feet wide and 14 to 22 feet long. We just need a 10 foot wide path, 60 feet of approach space, and 25 feet of overhead clearance for delivery. If driveway placement isn’t possible, we can often arrange street placement as an alternative.
How wide is a roll-off dumpster?
Most of our roll-off dumpsters have a standard width of 7 to 8 feet, making them suitable for most residential and commercial spaces. They will generally fit in a single-car driveway, on one side of a multi-car driveway, or in a parking space of a commercial parking lot.
How tall are different roll-off dumpster sizes?
Our dumpster heights range from 3 feet for 10-yard containers to up to 8 feet for 40-yard containers. Each of our roll-off dumpsters features a full-width back loading door, allowing you to step inside for easy loading. You can also toss debris over the sides if preferred.
How much does it cost to rent a roll-off dumpster?
Dumpster rental prices vary across the country, but all rates are dependent on:
- Dumpster size for the job
- Duration of rental
- Type of debris
- Weight of debris
Other fees that are common across most dumpster rental companies include:
- Delivery Fee: Charged for dumpster delivery to the site.
- Haul Fee: Charged for dumpster being picked up and hauled to the disposal site.
- Extra Days: Extra day charge may be as little as $5 – $10 per day, or significantly more. Check with the service providers you are considering.
- Overflow Fee: Any debris not beneath the Maximum Fill Line on an open top dumpster may incur this charge.
- Overload Fee: Loads above the Maximum Capacity Weight of a roll-off dumpster are fined for each additional ton.
Some companies, like ours, bundle standard fees to make it easier for customers to calculate and budget, giving you a more transparent and straightforward pricing experience.
*Permitting costs should also be taken into consideration. For more information, contact your local city or county as this charge is not included in the cost of your dumpster rental.
How can I use a roll-off dumpster when moving?
A temporary dumpster rental can help you get a fresh start in your new home by serving as a central disposal spot for large amounts of old or unwanted junk, broken items, and trash while you pack up your current home. It’s perfect for clearing out clutter, furniture, or items you no longer need, and don’t want to pay to move.
Once you arrive at your new home, you can also use the dumpster to get rid of packing materials, boxes, or any unwanted items left behind by the previous owner, making it easier to settle into your new space without excess clutter.
What items can't go in a roll-off dumpster?
Environmental safety is a top priority at UDS. Items such as batteries, asbestos, harmful chemicals, flammable liquids, and other hazardous materials should not be placed in a dumpster. If these items are found in your rental, you will be asked to remove them.
Hazardous materials are regulated differently depending on your state, county, and city. It’s important to know what is acceptable at your local recycling centers and landfills, or you can ask one of our team members for guidance. Some materials may come with additional fees. To avoid penalties, be upfront and clear about what you plan to dispose of in your dumpster.
Do roll-off dumpsters have a weight limit?
Depending on the size and type of roll-off selected, the dumpster and the trucks that haul them can carry between 4 and 10 tons. Each dumpster size has a specific weight limit included in your rate, and exceeding this limit will result in an extra fee. Keeping your dumpster within the weight limit is important for safe transport and proper disposal. Heavy materials like concrete and soil typically require a smaller container, while lighter debris like household junk can be placed in larger dumpsters.
Which roll-off dumpster size is best for heavy materials?
Our 10-yard dumpster is typically the best choice for heavy materials like concrete, dirt, and brick. These materials reach weight limits quickly, so a compact container helps prevent overloading while remaining cost-effective. Some dense materials can only partially fill the dumpster before exceeding the maximum weight limit. If you have any questions or need help calculating the weight and max space of your particular material, please call our team.
What time will my dumpster be delivered?
Your dumpster can arrive at any time between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. on your scheduled delivery day. Because we plan our routes for fuel-efficiency and overall route optimization, we’re not able to guarantee an exact delivery time.
If you need the dumpster available by a specific time, we recommend scheduling the delivery for the day before to ensure it’s there when you need it.
A few things to keep in mind:
No need to be home: You don’t need to be present for delivery or pickup.
Clear the delivery area: Please make sure the drop-off spot is clear of vehicles, debris, or other obstacles all day.
Gate access: If your property has a gate, please be sure it’s open on delivery day — or provide us with the code ahead of time.
Safety first: These steps help ensure smooth and safe placement when our driver arrives.
We appreciate your flexibility and understanding as we work to serve you efficiently and safely!
