Unlike typical glazes, Raku glazes are fired at a lower temperature, rapidly heated, and then removed from the kiln while still glowing hot. The piece is then subjected to post-firing reduction, typically in containers with combustible materials, to yield its distinct look.

The word "Raku" means "pleasure" or "enjoyment", and the process was favored by Zen Buddhist masters for its spontaneous results, embodying the Zen ideals of simplicity and directness.
