Of all the brocade regalia of manic postmodernity that have built the satanic mills and smashed the infernal looms of rock, Mahavishnu Huntington Majors' hit single (Be My) Elektrick Spy has shambled forth as an unstoppable freak of lightning, so powerful that it can actually bend minds like yellow strings of elastic metal cheese. Could there be speed bumps in the path of such an iron-booted colossus? Not a chance. A self-evident fact such as this needs no proving, but just to be obstinate, the gremlins of amplitude who put out all the miscellanies of Majors' leviathan oblations and distortions have graced us with this Selected Cuts album, containing not one, not two, not even three, but six, count 'em, six cuts of this rock classic by electric guitarist extraordinaire Mahavishnu Huntington Majors. The tunes on this CD begin with the standard release of (Be My) Elektrick Spy familiar to all true rock aficionados, guitar buffs and other unusual suspects. These selected cuts seem to have been chosen because they highlight particularly gobsmacked displays of pyromaniac riffing, chainsaw juggling or sublime caterwaul from the dude himself. Actually, listening to all the album's tracks is more fun than shooting fish in a barrel. Normally the tune is good enough to play at least three times over -- the last two listens experienced while jumping to one's feet and compulsively playing air guitar, almost against the very iron and magma of one's will, while calling the ceiling bad names at the top of one's lungs. Which is because this frantic tune comes barrelling out at you like a hurricane wind straight out of hell. The fury is sometimes impossible to withstand and you find yourself jumping up and playing air-guitar like you haven't done since the sixth grade. Then you shake your head and punch yourself in the goolies for being such a simple paramecium, but lo! with the next cut on the album, you're doing it again -- which happens to be normal if manic behavior for listeners to this particular tune. And so, gentle and euphonic manticore, a word of caution -- here you get six. Read more
